Farmers are bread, butter of country
To the editor:
I would wish for farmers to not plant an acre of grain for one year - just one year! Go on strike. These prices we receive are just not right; all this work and sweat for an end product of more debt.
When farmers cut back on planting wheat because it was not profitable, this country was short on wheat and the price sky rocketed.
Also it seems every March there is this “buy up acres” stuff, such as for corn. The last two years the price went up in March to get the farmers all fired up about planting corn. Then at harvest time, just like a bomb dropped ... the price drops. Those who have to sell have no choice but to take a lesser price. Maybe there should be a food shortage, so everyone knows the farmers are still the bread and butter of this country.
There are less and less of our young people who want to take on this occupation because they saw their parents struggle with finances because of low commodity prices and high input costs.
I think the farmers just should sit out one year - just one year. They would probably be financially ahead more than if they keep planting crops at the prices we are now getting. Maybe then those who are setting the prices would realize we just can't make a living doing it for nothing.
Why should our occupation be any different than others who go on strike to wake up the system?
