Halvorson, Hendrickson recognized for brand inspection service

Monday, November 24, 2008 3:14 PM CST

The North Dakota Stockmen's Association (NDSA) issued two special service awards to long-time local brand inspectors - Ken Halvorson and Jon Hendrickson - at its annual awards banquet in Minot, N.D., recently.

Halvorson of Stanley, N.D., was honored for 29 years as a local inspector. It is just one way Halvorson has dedicated his life to protecting the laws of the land. In addition to his inspection work, he has served in the Mountrail County Sheriff's Department for 34 years - 29 of those as sheriff.

Halvorson said being a brand inspector is an experience he truly enjoys, because it has given him the chance to work with people in the livestock industry and “lend a helping hand.”

Both Halvorson's parents and grandparents came from agricultural backgrounds, and he credits his dad for fostering his own love of horses and cattle. He is proud to run a few head of cattle of his own with his uncle today.

Halvorson has been recognized for outstanding service on several occasions in his law enforcement career as well.

Agriculture has been the center of Hendrickson's life ever since he was born in Adelaide Township southwest of Rhame, N.D., in 1944. After graduating from high school, he took over his family farm and ranch after his father became ill. He worked at Home Base Auction in Bowman, N.D., as well.

Richard Grieke recruited him as a brand inspector for the Home Base Auction in 1965, and he has been a Bowman County inspector ever since.

Hendrickson and his wife, Bernadette, have farmed and ranched all of their years, raising small grains and registered Maine-Anjou cattle for many years. He was a charter member of the Dakota Maine-Anjou Association and served as its president for three years.

Today, their son, Brett, his wife, Maretta, and their family have joined them in the operation, which consists of Angus cows and calves.

He and Bernadette have six married children, Bruce, Brett, Kevin, Brad, Loren and Kari, and 12 grandchildren.
